General Questions

Q. These are some seriously old software products. Why have a website for it at all?
A. For a few reasons, but primarily because some of the BBS doors are still somewhat popular. Having an official home on the world wide web provides a reliable and safe place to find them.

Posterity is also a contributing factor. The hey-day of the BBS was a significant period of networking history and a notable precursor to the Internet. One of the negative aspects of the World Wide Web is how much of a memory hole it has become over time. Preserving this history as best as we can provides tiny glimpses into a past that might prove insightful for future generations.

Q. Will you sell or license the rights or source code to a John Dailey Software product?
A. Sorry, we will not sell or license the rights or source code to any individual or company at this time.

Q. Can I get a copy of the source code or software details to a particular product?
A. Sorry, our source code or component of code is currently not available to any individual or company at this time.

Q. What methods can I use to register a product?
A. You may register in any of the following ways:

Online:
Credit card, check, money order, Purchase Order, PayPal, or phone-back
See our online purchasing system for information regarding these ordering methods.

Postal Mail:
Credit card or prepaid check or money order

Q. What is a BBS door?
A. A BBS door is a software program that is specially written to be "added on" to a Bulletin Board System similairly to the way a webmaster would add additional functionality to a web site. Guests can then log onto the bulletin board with their modem or via the internet, and enter the door seamlessly. Most doors, including the John Dailey Software doors, however, can be ran completely without a BBS for personal enjoyment.

Q. Can I get my registration code sent to me again?
A. Yes. Send an e-mail to us and include your name, the product you lost the code for and your billing address as it was when you first registered the software. Please note that it may take some time for us to send you your registration code, so please be patient.

Q. Are you still supporting your software?
A. Yes, we are still actively supporting all of our products.

Q. I sent an e-mail, but I haven't gotten a reply. What's up?
A. John Dailey Software receives quite a bit of e-mail each day and we've found the need to prioritize which ones receive immediate attention. If you have a technical or general question, the answer may be right here on the web site in the FAQ or Knowledgebase area.

Q. Did you receive my registration?
A. Most likely. Registrations made online are usually processed within a week. If you mailed or e-mailed your information it could take longer. If it's been more than three to four weeks, feel free to contact us.

Q. Are you still selling your products?
A. We sure are. Visit the online registration system here to see which products you can currently register right online.

Q. Who is Datagen Software Designs?
A. Datagen Software Designs is the name that John Dailey Software went by prior to 1996.

Q. I'm trying to find a software product other thanJohn Dailey Software. Do you have any information?
A. Sorry, if it isn't our product and it's not available on the John Dailey Software web site, then we probably don't know where to find it. However, if it's a BBS related product, you might want to try the Sysop's Corner, bbs.org, or the Door Distribution System.

Q. How do I enter my registration code?
A. It depends on the product you are specifically talking about. For Dungeon Master related products, simply run the program with "/REGISTER" on the command-line. For BRE, FE, FH and TAL, run the program with "REGISTER" on the command-line. Global War and Global Backgammon both require you to place the registration name and number in the configuration files WAR.CFG and GAMMON.CFG. Other programs have your registration information built-into the software and you won't need to enter a code.

Q. I'm looking for a BBS to call or telnet. Can you help me?
A. We do not keep a list of bulletin board systems at this time. You might have luck though by using a search engine to search for "TELNET BBS."

Q. Is there a place I can play any of your games on the web/internet?
A. There sure is. Many bulletin board systems are now hosting their services on the internet via the telnet protocol. Using a telnet program (preferabbly one other than the default one that comes with Windows), you simply connect to the BBS much like your web browser connects to a web page. If you're looking for telnet bulletin boards to try out, you'll have to use a search engine or directory to find them.

Q. Will you be porting any products to Unix, Linux, OS/2 or any other operating system?
A. No plans are currently made to port our existing line of products to other operating systems other than DOS and Windows.

Q. Are you going to make any of the John Dailey Software products 32bit instead of 16bit?
A. Yes. Research and development is currently underway for porting of our products to the 32bit platform. Please continue to visit the John Dailey Software web site and subscribe to the newsletter for up-to-date information.

Q. Will any of the John Dailey Software products work over a telnet connection?
A. Most, if not all of our products will work over a telnet connection with the right configuration. To do so, you will most likely need to use the product with a FOSSIL emulator. Synchronet, a free Windows 32bit BBS package, does a great job of this and its support for the telnet protocol is built into the system, making the setup easy and automatic. Other FOSSIL emulators are also available such as Netmodem and ComIP that you can use with your existing BBS software.

Q. What BBS products will your software work with?
A. Our software products work with nearly all available BBS products. If your BBS can create a door dropfile that our doors support, it should work with that bulletin board system.

Q. Can your games be run under any other operating systems besides DOS and Windows?
A. With the use of DOS or Windows emulators, our software can theoretically be ran under a wide variety of operating systems including, but not limited to: OS/2, Linux, and MacOS. To our knowledge, some of our products have been successfully ran under DOSEmu and Virtual PC.

Q. Are you going to make any of your products web or internet based?
A. Most likely, although no official plans have been made to develop our products specifically for the internet.

Q. Where can I get the door game Solar Realms Elite?
